Debate topic:

The internet is reducing the amount of time people spend working deeply

Yuma Yumna Jauza Maulidka (Team pro):

I agree with the opinion of the internet is reducing the amount of time people spend working deeply because what I see now is that many people have trouble getting a good internet network so that activities that are carried out online are interrupted. especially during this pandemic. We are required to have a good internet network because all our activities such as studying or working are done online. first take a look at our own country. many people are struggling and can't afford to buy internet packages. some even do not have a cell phone. the problem is that the economy in Indonesia is not evenly distributed but is required to study or work online. Internet use can also make someone less focused. For example, when students are studying or when workers are working, they can be distracted because of an incoming message or something that makes them curious so they open their cell phones and break their concentration. when their concentration has been diverted, their task will take more time to finish.

Alifa Fitratulhaq (Team contra):

I don't agree with that opinion. Because I think the internet is important for work. Precisely with the internet, it can be easier and faster to complete a job. For example we can find what we want to know on the internet and the results will appear quickly. We can also communicate via video conferencing even though we don't meet. And it requires internet. So, the internet is important to us and will not reduce the amount of time people spend working.

Irbad Adi Pradana (Team pro):

How often do we check our phones only to find news about a celebrity breakup, emails from friends about a viral post, or the daily flooding of notifications from YouTube. I argue that these distractions are unnecessarily damaging the quality of work that we do, and we're better off without them. We often don't take into consideration how taxing for our time a certain social media platform might be, we justify the use of a platform solely based on the benefits, not weighing it againts the cons. this way of thinking is what's called as the any-benefit mind-set, if there is any potential benefit of using it then its usage must be justified. we can quickly identify the problem with this mindset because it ignores all the negatives that come along with the tools in question. These services are engineered to be addictive. The more enticing social media you have pulling at your attention, the harder it’ll be to maintain focus on something important. An obvious way to fix this is to take some time to weigh the pros and cons of the platform you use.

Farhan Nafis Rayhan (Team contra):

I need to disagree with that. To be honest, it is not wrong if you say that this is a usage of any-benefit mindset. But my opinion is you need to view the topic from another perspective. Although you might see it as a distraction, based on my point of view the usage of social media could be used as a media for taking a rest. After a lot of work time it's not hard for our minds to get exhausted and become less motivated. If we take the needle instead, we will only get more stressed and in turn making it hard for us just to find new and creative ideas. Even worse at one point we might  get overwhelmingly bored and decide to just quit the work altogether. So we obviously need to take a break and free our mind every once in a while. Not only we will feel refreshed and motivated, we might also get new ideas for our work while we're going through social media or the web. Of course don't use up too much time otherwise it will slow our pace down instead. But with the enough amount of rest, not only will we enjoy our work we also might have it done faster than if we didn't get a rest at all. So i think that it's an absolutely good thing to surf the net or social media while taking our time from doing work. Other than that, we need to be aware that we're living in the 21'st century where technology is all around us already. Even if we try not to, we will eventualy use technology because its a nessecity during this age. So i think we definitely need to accustom ourselves with all these social medias, internet, or any other technology. While we also make efforts to  be less distracted, we also must be able to get the most of their benefit to get our work done efficiently. Thus i absolutely concur that the internet doesn't nessecarily stop us from spending more time working.

Opinion (Dialogue)

Opinion

There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation. It'll be bored if we don't do anything. All of people definitely want to take a me time or do something fun with friends. So as a student, Yuma, Harry, Bazzi and Renee want to go out from their dormitory and decide to take a vacation together. But, they are really confuse to choose which destination that they want to visit. They also decide to meet at the cafe to discuss about the destination that they want to visit.

Harry: Ugh, what time is it? Don't tell me that Bazzi and Renee will be late again.
Yuma: Just wait until 9.10 AM. If they don't come at that time, I will call one of them.

*sound of cafe's doorbell*
Cafe's waitress: "Welcome to St.Inie's Cafe"

Bazzi: Hi Yuma and Harry! Sorry we're late.
Harry: Hi Bazzi, Hi Renee. I wanna ask. Is it traffic or what?
Renee: Yes, it is. Bazzi said we'll be here at 8.55. But the truth is not. Sorry.
Yuma: Yeah, that's okay. So... You guys already know right we want to take a vacation for our summer vacation, right? But, we still confuse about the destination for our summer vacation. I want to hear your opinion. So.. What do you think?
Bazzi: Yeah. As far as I'm concerned, we should go to Santa Monica Beach. I know you guys already know that we can see a beautiful sunset and also the sunrise if we stay at the hotel near that beach.
Renee: Yes, that's a great idea Bazzi. I'm totally agree with you.
Yuma: Wait. Why don't we go abroad? I heard that Harry want to go abroad. I think you guys want that too, right?
Harry: You're right Yuma. I really want it.
Renee: I'm not sure about that. I'm afraid that my mom wont allow me to go abroad because of the expensive plane ticket.
Yuma: Don't worry, Renee. My mom already have a discount for each.
Bazzi: Wow really? Is it a big discount?
Yuma: Sure! But that only applies to destination in Asia.
Harry: It's okay, Yuma. That's sound great!
Yuma: Okay, so we choose to go to Asia. To be honest, I want to visit Bali. So, what do you think guys?
Bazzi: I agree with you entirely. What do you think, Renee?
Renee: Hmm.. I'm sorry to disagree with you, Yuma. I guess we can visit Okinawa, Japan. I have seen it on the internet. Okinawa have a beach with beautiful white sand.
Harry: In my experience, beach in Okinawa has many snakes. I don't think that you'll be comfort, Renee. I know you're afraid of snakes.
Yuma: Yeah, as far as I know, Harry is true. There's a lot of venomous snakes.
Bazzi: Look at this, guys! It such a beautiful beach.
Harry: Wow, What beach is that?
Bazzi: Kuta Beach, Bali
Yuma: So, what do you think, Renee? Do you have another opinion for our summer vacation?
Renee: Correct me if I wrong, but I heard in Kuta Beach there's a lot of monkeys.
Bazzi: In my limited experience, there's no monkey in Kuta Beach.
Yuma: Yeah. You're right, Bazzi. I strongly believe that Uluwatu Tample in Dewata Island has many monkeys, not Kuta Beach.
Harry: Don't worry, Renee. You'll be safe if we visit Kuta Beach.
Renee: Okay, I agree with you guys. So, what are we waiting for? Let's set the date for our summer vacation!
Yuma: Okay. My mom said the discount period for departure is from June 6 to June 13 and for the way back home is from June 20 to June 27. So, what do you guys think about the date?
Harry: It'll be better if we take around 2 weeks in there.
Bazzi: Off top of my head, I prefer if we just take around 1 week in there.
Renee: What I think is same like Bazzi. Just around 1 week. After going on vacation to Bali, we can stay at one of our homes and explore more places in California.
Yuma: Yes, I am of the opinion that Renee and Bazzi said. So that we can save more money too, right?
Harry: Okay. I'm agree with you guys. I forgot to think about it.
Bazzi: Don't worry, Harry.
Yuma: What about the exact date?
Renee: I'm positive that June 13 is our departure date and we'll be back home on June 20. There's no choice if we want to get the discount.
Harry: Oh my god, yes. I just realized.
Yuma: Yeah, me too.
Bazzi: Haha, same! Good job, Renee.
Yuma: Okay. So, we will be on vacation to Bali for 1 week. we will leave on June 13 and will return on June 20. our main destination is Kuta beach. Is it already correct?
Bazzi, Renee, Harry: Yes, it is.
Yuma: Okay guys. I hope this summer vacation can be our best summer vacation ever.
Harry: Do you guys wanna order a cup of coffee or bread?
Yuma, Bazzi, Renee: Sure we want!
Harry: Okay, order please!

Suggestion and Offer (Dialogue)

Suggestion and Offer

Theme: STUDENT'S PRESIDENT SELECTION

One day, the spread of the corona virus has stopped and activities begin as usual. The students go back to school and look happy to be able to meet again with their friends. Including Yuma and Alifa who were talking in the canteen. They are talking about the student president's selection that will be held tomorrow.

Alifa: Yuma, did you see that poster on information board?
Yuma: Which one?
Alifa: The poster that talks about student’s president selection.
Yuma: I don’t know that poster but I heard about that student’s president selection.
Alifa: So, what do you think about the candidates?
Yuma: I don’t think the candidate 3 can be our student’s president. Because I heard that he isn’t the smart one in academic things. I’m afraid that he can’t compensate his grade and his big responsibility in organization as a student’s president.
Alifa: He could compensate it. As long as he can execute his job in the organization, it’ll be fine.
Yuma: How about candidate 1? I think he is a good boy and he has good grades!
Alifa: I’m not sure about that. I heard he cheated during the physics test.
Yuma: Really? How do you know that?
Alifa: My friend from his class told me about that. She is the witness too.
Yuma: Okay, I don’t know it’s a true one or not but for anticipation, we’d better not to choose him.
Alifa: I prefer choose candidate 3. You?
Yuma: I don’t think it’s a good idea. I heard so many bad things about him. Did you know? He actually a smoker.
Alifa: Oh my god, I just found out about it.
Yuma: Yes, he is. I have a photo of him in my phone. Look at this!

Alifa: That’s a shame. Even though I admire him because he’s very friendly and a little bit handsome.
Yuma: Haha, let’s mingle to the new one and a better one!
Alifa: Yeah, you’re right. So, I think I can read your mind. You will choose candidate 2, right?
Yuma: Sure. From my information about candidate 1 and 3, I prefer to choose candidate 2. My other friend also suggested that I should choose him.
Alifa: Okay, I’m agree with you. He’s better than others. Would you like to order something like fried rice? I want a fried rice but I’m not sure that I can finish it by my own.
Yuma: Alright, I can help you to finish your dish. But with one agreement…
Alifa: What’s that?
Yuma: Would you like to treat me? So, I don’t have to pay the bill.
Alifa: Haha, sure. Why not?
Yuma: Thank you! You’re the best friend I ever know!
Alifa: Yes, I am. No need to doubting me.
Yuma: Haha. Of course, you are sis!
